The Water Oriented Recreation District of Comal County (WORD) is a Special District authorized by The Texas Legislature and vested with taxing and legislative authority. It was created to impose a user fee on tourism to the District and use those funds to provide health & sanitation, law enforcement, and other services to the District so that property owner taxes would not have to cover the costs of these tourist related services.
The categories of businesses required to obtain a WORD permit and collect and remit user fees are as follows: Short term lodging* (including home rentals) Water equipment rentals and shuttles Campgrounds RV Parks Boat storage (dry and wet slip) Fishing guides River guides
*The short term designation for lodging, camping, and RV parks is for stays of less than 30 days and is designed this way to apply to tourists, not partial year residents.
