2-17-11 * The 13th Annual Canyon Lake Winter Texan Reception has just wrapped up for another year. We had a wonderful turnout with nearly 300 Snowbirds, Canyon Lake businesses showcasing their venue and restaurants serving up yummy samples from their menu! We even had Sheriff Bob Holder ready to put on an apron and serve up coffee and tea but Eleanor & Dorothy, two of our devoted annual WTR volunteers, were already pouring lots of tea for the highly energized crowd. Seventeen-plus vendors promoted their business including Ace Hardware, Canyon Lake Lodging Association, Colonial Manor Care Center, Eden Hill Community, Friends of Tye Preston Memorial Library, Hill Country RV Resort, Lake Pointe Resort, Lazy L&L Campground, Log Cabins at Jacob’s Creek, Mid-Texas Symphony, McQueeney Collision, Prudential Don Johnson/Rio Guadalupe Condos, Rio Raft & Resort, St. Francis by the Lake Episcopal Church, ‘Welcoming Neighbor’, Julie Wherry Jewelry Rep for Silpada Designs and Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park. We had a good number of restaurants/specialty food vendors including Chicken Coop, Cupcakes Divine, Granny D’s, Gristmill, Italian Garden, Lucky’s, Silver Sage Grille, The Real Pit BBQ and Windmill. All of these businesses stepped up to contribute to the success of this annual event our Winter Texans clearly love and appreciate. So many of our volunteers came together to help with everything from the set-up the night before, practicing their dance routines for weeks as part of the entertainment AND baking TONS of cookies, cakes, pies and Rice Krispie treats for our “Dessert Room”. Yes, a room FULL of desserts… not just a Table Full. Many other business members donated items for the goodie bags given out to all of the attendees and then Bridget McDougall of Scenic River Properties actually tried to get everyone’s brain working overtime with Texas Trivia. All of the questions were about the history of Texas or some little known facts about our great state. One question: Name the first two US President’s born in Texas… if you think you know the answer, you could be wrong. The answer is at the end of this update… Much thanks to all of you that spent an enormous amount of time planning, figuring out this year’s theme, shopping for decorations, stuffing bags, moving bleachers out of the CRRC Rec Center to make room for the vendor tables, and all of the hundreds of other little details it took to make this event work. Everyone that came together in one way or another to make this event such a success is the absolute best! You know who you are! Now, does anyone want to come by and grab some leftover dessert from our DESSERT ROOM? (Answer to trivia: Dwight D. Eisenhower & Lyndon B. Johnson). Someone from New York or South Dakota got the answer right; all of us Texans got it wrong! Kim Morris, President Canyon Lake Chamber

Right Now is a great time to book a tour for you and your family or friends. Public tours are posted on the Gorge website through the end of March! Mid-March look for the second quarter tours posted for April through June. For more information visit www.canyongorge.org. 1-22-11 The Canyon Lake Golf Club was the setting for this year’s 26th Annual Canyon Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet. The Golf Club has new owners and they did an outstanding job hosting the evening’s event. Guests first gathered in the Bar around 5:45 pm to see the 30+ Auction items donated for the event. Around 6:30 everyone was seated in the dining area and welcomed by Board Chair, Jaynellen Ladd. Music and entertainment was provided by the always amazing Brenda Varne. Dinner was served and everyone enjoyed the delicious Prime Rib and Chicken w/Brandy Cream Sauce. Between courses guests wandered back and forth to check on their bids at the silent auction tables and as dessert was served, guests were given one last chance to bid on their favorite items. Everyone was terribly diplomatic and no cat fights ensued with Sheriff Bob Holder on standby to “call” for a later live auction item or two. Prior to announcing this year’s winners in the three categories, Jaynellen talked about the importance of the Chamber in the community and the valuable contributions so many of our members bestow through their volunteerism with multiple organizations. Chamber President Kim Morris then began presenting the awards by announcing the winner for the 2010 Community Spirit Award: husband and wife Allen & Sheila Bartram are a dynamic team and volunteer at numerous organizations. The next category for Beautification Business of the Year was announced: CRRC of Canyon Lake was the winner for the great job they’ve completed with improvements both inside and out to the CRRC Recreation Center and the Thrift Store. Finally, the last award was presented for the 2010 Business of the Year. GVTC was the recipient and were applauded for all of their hard work and Community efforts throughout the year. Congratulations to all our winners and all those nominated! The evening concluded with a heated bidding encouraged by Sheriff Bob Holder as he entertained everyone with his Auctioneer expertise. The first item on the agenda was for a three month pass of unlimited golf at the Canyon Lake Golf Club for a foursome. The second item was box seats (4 people) for the 2011 live racing season of at Retama Park Racetrack along with complimentary valet parking. At one point Commissioner Gregory Parker was "texting in" his bid against the Sheriff's wife and the bidding turned into a race of its own. At the conclusion of the live auction the dance floor was once again filled with lots of happy people dancing their feet off to Brenda’s great music. Thanks to all who helped make this year’s banquet a dazzling success!

11-24-10 Our November Mixer was held last evening at the Super S Grocery Store in Sattler. We had a remarkable turnout considering it was only two days before Thanksgiving. Alan Buxkempner and his two store managers Eddie Pachecho (Sattler Super S) and James Sloan (Startzville Super S) worked their usual magic and produced a delicious meal of barbecue and lots of great side dishes. We enjoyed the food and the great camaraderie between Chamber members, guests and our local dignitaries. The weather cooperated and it felt like we were having a unique & rather large tailgate party as we awaited Football games being played on Thanksgiving Day. The Mixer was made even more poignant by the presence of the recipients of the 2nd & 3rd quarter Honor Guards from Randolph Air Force Base. We presented the three winners with goody baskets that each held fabulous gifts donated by the generous people in our Canyon Lake community. The Super S gentlemen then presented each Honor Guard recipient and their commanding officers (who came out to support their Airmen) with a Texas Lotto packet. I believe fifteen of these packets were given out to these wonderful men and women defending our country; each packet contained 20 lotto tickets. The Canyon Lake Community is truly unique! Much thanks to all~ Kim Morris

10-1-10 The weather has been incredible this past week as if we ordered it directly from Mother Nature herself. How lucky are we? I am sure hot weather will reappear before Autumn is fully underway but let’s enjoy the cool mornings and the beautiful starry nights before the climate changes once again. Our September Mixer was held this past Tuesday at the BEAUTIFUL Fire Station #1 on Scissortail just off of Loop 306. Those who attended were welcomed by Chief Shawn Wheery and his incredible staff and treated to an up close and personal look at the new Fire truck, ER on Wheels (MICU ~ Mobile Intensive Care Unit) and all the other interesting equipment needed for Rescue efforts or firefighting on land, water and anything else. Chief Wheery gave us an update on the progress of Fire Station #5 currently under construction at Village West. This new station is a duplicate of #1 but will be one-half the size. The opening date has been pushed back a bit and it looks like it might be happening sometime in late January or early February. Chief Wheery told us he’d update us when they are near completion. The staff decided on door prizes matching the theme of the venue which included first aid kits, fire extinguishers and gift certificates for CPR class(es)/certification. The Lucky Sailor brought in a couple of platters of their famous chicken wraps which complemented the appetizers prepared by the Fire Station staff. Dessert was supplied by Mrs. Bush’s (yummy) Pie Company which consisted of her chocolate brownies and two types of cookies with each cookie being almost the size of a softball! At the conclusion of the mixer all guests were invited to tour the entire facility including the kitchen and dorms. FYI: New fire stations no longer install the Fireman’s pole for the Firefighters to slide down. A few of us had SO been looking forward to seeing that! Enjoy the season and prepare for a busy October! Kim Morris
9-17-10 The next few months are busy times for the Canyon Lake Area Chamber. Many of our members host wonderful Fall themed events that kick off the season leading up to the Christmas Holidays. It is so hard to believe that it will soon be “that time of year”. How quickly time flies so we must savor each gathering and enjoy the friendship and camaraderie we share when we come together during these special times. Tomorrow night, September 18th is “Jerry Bob’s Almost World Famous Cat Fish Fry” sponsored by Canyon Lake Republican Women. The event starts at 6:00 pm at the CRRC Rec Center on S. Access Road. Tickets are $12. Wednesday evening, September 22nd , “Moonlight in the Gorge” fund raising event will start at 6:30 pm. Folks will be dining under the stars and under a Full Moon in this beautiful Nature produced venue. There are a few tickets still available for this truly one of a kind event. Please call the Gorge Preservation Society office asap at 830-964-5424. On Thursday, September 23rd the “Hill Country in Style 2010” fashion show and luncheon will be held at the Seekatz Opera House in New Braunfels. St. Francis by the Lake Episcopal Church Women sponsors the event and tickets may be purchased ($15 each) by calling 830-964-3820 or 830-964-3793. The luncheon starts promptly at 11:30am. At this point, the only thing missing is “a Blue Norther”. I think we could handle a cold wind blowing through our lake community right about now. Wouldn’t that be wonderful following on the heels of our latest rainfall? Call the Chamber office at 830-964-2223 if you are a member and have a special event open to the public. We will be happy to promote that for you.
